Niels Moller Restoration
79 Chair. Spring 2021.
I found this chair abandoned on 8th ave during an winter rainstorm. The rosewood was bleached to a faded gray, the seat was full of stains and mildew, and the structural stability was comprised. However, I knew the wood was hardy and I had a feeling that this chair could be become something beautiful once more. After drying out, a light sand and several coats of my own garnet shellac recipe allowed this wood to come back to life. Rather than simply selecting a period correct fabric as I would in a traditional restoration, I hoped something unique would serve to draw attention to this imperfect chair and celebrate the hardships it suffered. The hand tufted seat helps provide a softness and an invitation.
